1 - American Baptists believe that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior, and that the Bible is the divinely inspired word of God that serves as the final written authority for living out the Christian faith. American Baptists celebrate the fact that belief in Jesus Christ assures salvation and eternal fellowship with a loving God. The events of the first Easter week are the cornerstones of our faith: the death of Christ, in which He took upon Himself the sin of the world, and the Resurrection, which gave proof of His triumph over sin and death. Holy Scripture always has been for American Baptists the authoritative and trustworthy guide for knowing and serving the God who is revealed as Creator, Savior and Advocate. 2 - American Baptists partake of two ordinances: believers’ baptism and The Lord’s Supper. Baptism, an act of full immersion following Christ’s example, is undertaken by those spiritually mature enough to understand its profound, symbolic significance: resurrection to new life in Christ. Through The Lord’s Supper, or Holy Communion, the bread and cup that symbolize the broken body and shed blood offered by Christ recall God’s great love for us—just as they did for the disciples on the eve of Christ’s crucifixion. 3 - American Baptists believe that the committed individual Christian can and should approach God directly, and that individual gifts of ministry should be shared. American Baptists hold that all who truly seek God are both competent and called to develop in that relationship. They have rejected creeds or other statements that might compromise each believer’s obligation to interpret Scripture under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and within the community of faith. American Baptists also celebrate the special gifts of all believers, testifying that God can use each of us in ministry. Do You Want To Meet Jesus Christ? 1. God Loves You! The Bible says, "God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life" The problem is that . . . 2. All of us have done, said or thought things that are wrong. This is called sin, and our sins have separated us from God. The Bible says “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” God is perfect and holy, and our sins separate us from God forever. The Bible says “The wages of sin is death.” The good news is that, about 2,000 years ago, 3. God sent His only Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins. Jesus is the Son of God. He lived a sinless life and then died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. “God demonstrates His own love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.” Jesus rose from the dead and now He lives in heaven with God His Father. He offers us the gift of eternal life -- of living forever with Him in heaven if we accept Him as our Lord and Savior. Jesus said "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except by Me." God reaches out in love to you and wants you to be His child. "As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe on His name." You can choose to ask Jesus Christ to forgive your sins and come in to your life as your Lord and Savior. 4. If you want to accept Jesus as your Savior and turn from your sins, you can ask Him to be your Savior and Lord by praying a prayer like this: "Lord Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God. Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. Please forgive my sins and give me the gift of eternal life. I ask you in to my life and heart to be my Lord and Savior. What's Happening Here In August Church Office Hours: Wednesday 9 AM—12 PM Thursday 9 AM—12 PM Friday 9 AM—12 PM The Board Of Directors: The board will meet on Tuesday, August 13th@ 6:30 p.m. Tuesday Bible Studies are afternoons & evenings on August 13th & 27th. Meet at 1:30 & 6:30PM in the Lounge. All are welcome to join at any time for these Bible studies. Lupe' Garibay leads the study. Board of Directors Bible Study is 4th Tuesday of every month at 6:30 PM in the conference room. A Weekly Craft, Crochet and Knitting Group will be meeting every Wednesday from 1-3 PM. Come and join us anytime if you would like to to be a part of it. Bring your own craft, coloring books, yarn projects you are working on, or games to share with others. Pastor Tom's Corner We go through cycles. Cycles when families gather to celebrate together: weddings, graduations, vacations and so on. Some of us, however, dread meeting certain “concerned” relatives whose questions can make those who are ill, jobless, separated, divorced, still single or childless feel that there’s something wrong with them. Imagine the plight of Elizabeth, who was childless despite being married for many years. In her culture, that was seen as a sign of God’s disfavor (see 1 Samuel 1:5–6) and could actually be considered shameful. So while Elizabeth had been living righteously (Luke 1:6), her neighbors and relatives may have suspected otherwise. Nonetheless, Elizabeth and her husband continued to serve the Lord faithfully. Then, when both were well advanced in years, a miracle occurred. God answered her prayer (v. 13). He loves to show us His favor (v. 25). And though He may seem to delay, His timing is always right and His wisdom always perfect. For Elizabeth and her husband, God had a special gift: a child who would become the Messiah’s forerunner (Isaiah 40:3–5). "God's love is patient, persistent, and persevering." Rick Warren Do you feel inadequate because you seem to lack something—a university degree, a fancy job title, your health, a spouse, a child, a job, a car, a house? Keep living for Him faithfully, prayerfully seeking opportunity, and waiting patiently for Him and His plan. That is what Elizabeth did. No matter our circumstances, God is working in and through us. He knows your heart. He hears your prayers. God, You are forever faithful and good. Please help us as we trust in You, even when we experience heartache.

Pastor Tom's Thoughts Change. Why to do we fight it so hard? Why do I fight it? Perhaps it is the fear of the unknown and unfamiliar. Yet, little in life is possible without change. As a chaplain I have the opportunity to chat with residents, families, and staff on a daily basis regarding changes in their lives. Many of those circumstances involve life-changing events. As we chat it becomes apparent that we both have more questions than answers, and that’s okay. The challenge will be to remain adaptable and to embrace the changes as they happen as we search for the meaning. As I reflect on how much my life has and is changing over the last few years one thing has always come to the fore. God does not change. As the Bible says Jesus is “the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). A truth in that statement is that His character, attributes, power and glory are always constant. For me, that is an anchor that I hold onto in a sea of change. As my journey as a pastor, chaplain, husband, father, grandfather, and son continues to unfold I find peace in the unfailing presence of Jesus, God Incarnate. There are heavy periods in pastoral care ministry. In fact, the days can be particularly full of deep pastoral encounters. Additionally, other ministry opportunities have been demanding my attention. It helps when I prioritize things according to importance and relevance. Some things that have helped me stay on track are these anchors: 1. The affirmation of my ministry here at First Baptist Church. The affirmation reinforces my pastoral calling and identity. 2. The discipline of writing in a journal has helped me. Writing helps me to untangle my thoughts and feelings as I process the events. 3. My recent readings in Psalms have helped me as I have been thinking a lot more lately about suffering. The Psalmist always comes back to the goodness of God even in the midst of suffering. Especially Psalm 27:1. “The LORD is my light and my salvation-- whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life -- of whom shall I be afraid?” May God grant all of us His peace as we trust Him through the changing seasons of life.
